Dr. James Fonger joins VEINatlanta! Dr. Fonger is a nationally known heart surgeon and has performed several thousand cardiac surgical procedures. He has been instrumental in the research and development of medical devices, techniques and technologies used in the cardiac field today. He will join Dr. Louis Prevosti in the treatment of venous disorders.
Dr. James Fonger graduated from University of Manitoba College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Toronto, after which he did a fellowship in artificial heart research in San Francisco. He trained in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He has held positions on the cardiovascular surgical faculty at Boston University, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, and he was Chief of Cardiac Surgery of Washington Adventist Hospital in DC. In 2008 he was recruited to Atlanta by the St. Joseph’s Health System to help open a medical device development and testing center near Georgia Tech. He continued to work in this field until joining Dr. Prevosti to focus on the diagnosis and treatment of venous diseases.
Throughout his career Dr. Fonger has worked with new therapies and technologies. He has performed several thousand cardiac surgical procedures and lectured internationally on his research conducted at Boston University and Johns Hopkins.
Dr. Fonger is board certified in general surgery and cardiovascular surgery. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He is a founder and past president of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery and the 21st Century Cardiothoracic Surgical Society. He currently volunteers his time to mentor young entrepreneurs in launching new medical device companies.
