Ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy involves using an ultrasound machine to guide a thin needle into a vein. A medicine called polidocanol is then injected into the vein, causing the vein to close down. Usually the polidocanol is injected as foam. In some cases, Varithena Foam is used. Varithena is an FDA approved polidocanol foam.

Walking is encouraged immediately after the procedure, and routine daily activities can be resumed immediately. Strenuous activities can be resumed in 3-7 days. A compression stocking is worn for 2 -7 days, depending on the size of the vein treated.
