What is Varithena®?
VEINatlanta now offers Varithena®, the first FDA approved injectable foam treatment to treat venous reflux as one of our treatment options. Varithena® is a minimally invasive, nonsurgical treatment for venous insufficiency in the leg veins, including the saphenous veins and varicose veins. It can be used in conjunction with other treatment modalities to relieve venous symptoms in the legs, such as aching, swelling and varicose veins.
Varithena® is administered in the office in less than one hour using local anesthesia. Patients can return to daily activities such as driving and walking immediately after the treatment.
Who is a candidate for Varithena®?
Varithena® is indicated for treating leg veins that have symptomatic venous insufficiency (also called venous reflux). Symptoms can include legs that throb, ache, swell, feel tired or heavy, or have bulging vein, or have restless leg or night cramps.
Venous insufficiency is diagnosed by a history and physical examination as well as a venous ultrasound. Your VEINatlanta vein specialist will evaluate your case to determine if Varithena® is right for you.
Side effects of Varithena®
Although Varithena® is generally very safe, side effects can occur. The most common side effects associated with Varithena® include:
- Leg pain or discomfort
- Injection site bruising or pain
- Blood clots in the legs
What to expect during Varithena®
During the procedure, your VEINatlanta vein specialist will administer Varithena® into the abnormal vein through a small IV catheter. The Varithena® micro foam will fill the vein and causes it to close down and eventually be absorbed. Blood will be rerouted to healthy nearby veins.
