Darrel Ervin has spent a lot of time on his feet. He served 23 years in the Army, another 13 years teaching middle school math and geography, and three years working as a youth pastor. He’s still active in church, teaching 4th and 5th graders and leading two small groups. But two years ago, severe leg pain disrupted his ability to remain active.

“I felt like I had cement shoes on,” says the 69-year-old from Sharpsburg, just south of Atlanta.

Darrel tried orthopedic rehabilitation for a year, with no results. Then he decided to give VEINatlanta a try.

“A friend told me about vein surgery, so I sought out VEINatlanta,” says Darrel.

Dr. Moore at VEINatlanta performed an ultrasound and diagnosed Darrel with venous reflux, also known as chronic venous insufficiency. Venous reflux occurs when the one-way valves in the legs malfunction, allowing blood to flow backward and pool in the legs. The condition can trigger a variety of symptoms including heaviness in the legs, aching, leg pain, leg swelling, leg cramps, skin changes, varicose veins, and leg ulcers.

Dr. Moore recommended an in-office procedure called radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure. It involves treating the affected area with a local anesthetic before inserting a thin catheter into the diseased vein. As the catheter is withdrawn, it delivers RF energy, heating the vein wall and causing the collagen in the vein wall to shrink. The blood vessel then closes, which eliminates venous reflux.

Once the vein closes, blood reroutes to healthy veins and circulation improves. The treatment takes 30 minutes or less and usually causes minimal to no post-surgery discomfort.

“The procedure was not painful,” says Darrel. “I was told my leg might feel different in a few days, but I felt immediate relief when I got off the exam table just after the first vein was done.”

“I had originally planned to see if there was any pain relief on my right leg before scheduling the left leg. I felt so much relief after the right leg was treated, I went ahead and scheduled the procedures for the left leg. It took four days total to do both legs, and the results were terrific.”

After suffering for two years, Darrel is back in the pool, enjoying water aerobics with his wife. He also plans on taking up disc golf as well as yoga. Plus, his cruising speed is back on track.

“I am walking fast again,” he says. “It’s remarkable how quickly I was able to walk and move again.”
